Employers Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Awards Ceremony at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

On Friday, December 1, 2017 at 8:00 a.m. members of the Arizona Employers Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) presented awards to members of the Embry Riddle Aeronautical University during the monthly ERAU faculty and staff awards recognition breakfast in the Student Union Hangar.

Chancellor Dr. Frank Ayers hosted the event and after presenting several awards to faculty and staff for their outstanding service he was then surprised that Arizona ESGR volunteers had several awards to be presented to members of ERAU.

State ESGR Chairman Darren Venters presented the Seven Seals Award for meritorious leadership and initiative in support of the men and women who serve in the National Guard and Reserve to Dr. Frank Ayers for Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. He also presented the Seven Seals Award for meritorious leadership and initiative in support of the men and women who serve in the National Guard and Reserve to Colonel Randy Kaufman, Commander of the AFROTC Detachment 028, which is recognized, “As the Best Detachment in the West” with over 300 cadets.

Lt. Colonel Big Mountain described the award, "A 'Seven Seals Award' to ERAU and Col Kaufman, which is the broadest and most inclusive award given by ESGR and is presented at the discretion of the State Chair or by ESGR senior leadership. The Seven Seals Award is presented in recognition of significant individual or organizational achievement, initiative, or support that promotes and supports the ESGR mission.”

State ESGR Chairman Darren Venters presented the Patriotic Supervisor Award to Chancellor Dr. Frank Ayers. Dr. Ayers was nominated by Reserve Lieutenant Colonel Marella Big Mountain who holds a Doctorate in Applied Leadership and is an Associate Professor in Leadership & Management. In her award nomination, she stated that Dr. Frank Ayers has gone out of his way to support her in the role as an Air Force Reservist assigned at the university. He comes to many of the Air Force events promoting a strong partnership between his civilian and military members. She related that it is an honor to work at a university that works so hard to engage its military members equally with their civilian counterparts.

Lt. Colonel Big Mountain explained, "The 'Patriotic Employer Award' to Dr. Frank Ayres reflects his efforts made to support citizen warriors (aka reservists) through a wide-range of measures including flexible schedules, time off, caring for military families, and granting time away as needed. It would be nice to know how many reservists currently attend and work at ERAU.

Finally, AZ ESGR Northern Section Chair, Larry Jacobs presented Chancellor Dr. Frank Ayers with a reaffirmation ESGR Statement of Support (SOS) that is signed by Secretary of Defense Retired General James N. Mattis and National ESGR Chair Retired General Craig McKinley.  The Statement of Support recognizes that the Guard and Reserve are essential to the strength of our nation and well-being of our community. It also appreciates the values, leadership and unique skills service members bring to the workforce and encourages opportunities to employ Guardsman, Reservists, transitioning Service members and Veterans.

As Lt. Colonel Big Mountain said, "A Reaffirmation 'Statement of Support' (SOS) was awarded to ERAU which was signed by the National ESGR Chair Retired General Craig  McKinley and  Secretary of Defense Retired General James Mattis. The Statement of Support Program is the cornerstone of ESGR’s effort to gain and maintain employer support for the Guard and Reserve. The intent of the program is to increase employer support by encouraging employers to act as advocates for employee participation in the military. Supportive employers are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the Nation’s Guard and Reserve units.

What does it mean for a company to support the Guard and Reserve?

"We will provide our managers and supervisors with the tools they need to effectively manage employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve.

"We appreciate the values, leadership, and unique skills Service members bring to the workforce and will encourage opportunities to hire Guardsmen, Reservists, and Veterans.

"We will continually recognize and support our country’s Service members and their families, in peace, in crises, and in war."
