Gem and Minerals Up for Sale at Fourteenth Annual Show

PRESCOTT VALLEY- Over sixty vendors and thousands of people will fill the Prescott Valley Event Center this weekend as the Prescott Gem and Mineral Club hosts their fourteenth annual show.

At the show, which started Friday and goes until Sunday, vendors are showcasing various items up for sale. Prescott Gem and Mineral Club newsletter editor Maggi Liber said vendors must have 80% of their wares be lapidary, gem and mineral rock hound related.

“A lot of the stuff here is handcrafted by the people your buying it from,” Liber said. “Your are talking to the artist, not just the retail merchant.”

Keith Horst is a lapidary arts professor at Yavapai College and he instructs students on the art of cutting, grinding, sanding and polishing gem stones. Along with being a vendor at the event since the start, Horst is a founding member of the club and has seen not only the club grow but the show as well.

“It’s grown really big,” Horst said. “A lot of people like gems and minerals and rocks and stuff so we got a lot of people coming by just to see the curiosity of what’s available from the earth.”

While there are many different kinds of gems and minerals, Liber says individuals don’t have to be knowledgeable on the subject to enjoy the show.

“You don’t have to be a rock hound,” Liber said. “You just have to be somebody that appreciates the natural beauty that this earth has provided us.”

The Prescott Gem and Mineral Club’s annual show is open from 9am to 5pm on Saturday and 9am to 4pm on Sunday. Tickets are $5 for adults and $4 for seniors 65+, veterans and students. Children under twelve get in free.
