The Bradshaw Mountain Bears faced a tough opponent in the Cactus Cobras and will be chalking up this game as a learning experience.

Thousands lined up to watch the first game of the season, as the Bradshaw Mountain Bears faced the Cactus Cobras in a non-conference game. Playing in front of a standing-room-only enthusiastic crowd, the Bears put in a huge effort, but just couldn’t keep the well-experienced Cobras out of the end zone.

With less than three minutes left in the first quarter, the Cobras struck, scoring the first of many TDs, as well as the extra point, bringing the score to 0-7.

Two minutes into the 2nd quarter, Cactus scored again on a completed pass. However they missed the extra point, so the score was 0-13.

Four minutes later, Cactus player Mahal Lee (#10), had a 12 yard rushing TD. The score continued it’s lopsided ways, now 0-20.

Another TD for the Cobras brings the score to 0-27. And they score once more in the half, 0-34.

Bradshaw Mountain finally comes alive with a determined march down the field, and scores their first TD of the night. The two-point conversion failed, and the halftime score holds at 6-34.

At the beginning of the third quarter, Bradshaw receives the kickoff, and seems to have newfound focus. But an interception by Cactus  stopped the Bears forward direction and returned the ball to the Cobras.

With six minutes left in the 3rd quarter, the Cobras' Damaria Norris (#21) scored on an 18 yard rushing TD. Cactus again missed their point after, and the score was 6-40.

Cactus scored once more in the 3rd quarter, on a 30 yard rushing TD by #32, Anthony Flores. With 4 minutes left, the score was 6-47.

Bradshaw fought back, though with a 69 yard rushing TD, and suddenly the score is 13-47. A Cactus fumble soon returns the ball to Bradshaw and Devon Olson scores the third TD of the night for the bears. 20-47.

The Cobras aren’t done with their display of dominance in the 3rd quarter, however, and they score once more, 54-20.

Both teams would score one time in the 4th quarter - the Bears added a 3-pt field goal to their side of the board, and Cactus scored one more TD.

Final score: 61-23, and the Cactus victory is in the record book.

Coach Chuck Moller is new to the Bears’ program, and he knew this would be a work in progress. In a pre-season interview, Moller noted the strong football tradition in Prescott Valley, but recognized he’d have to rebuild with younger players. “94.7% of the offense graduated last year,” he told eNews reporter Torrence Dunham. “So we have a lot of building [to do].”

In case you missed that preseason interview:

Next up, the Bears face Estrella Foothills (1-1) on Friday @ 7 PM in Goodyear in another non-conference game. The Estrella Foothills Wolves are ranked in Arizona at 79
