They work hard and get great grades. And they’re excellent soccer players, too.

Big Idea: Two BASIS students sign letters of intent to play soccer at Arizona State University and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

  • BASIS students are well-rounded
  • Cori Sullivan signed to play at Arizona State University
  • Gavin Underwood signed to play at Embry-Riddle
  • Both students received academic and athletic scholarships

When most people think of BASIS School, they think of rigorous academics. But, the Head of BASIS Prescott, Abbie McCarty, wants people to know that the students are well-rounded kids, participating in extra-curricular activities such as jobs, church activities and sports in addition to their studies.

Cori Sullivan and Gavin Underwood are great examples of that. Despite several weekly trips back and forth to Phoenix to play club soccer, these honor students maintained their grades at a high level.

Of course, it takes lots of support to keep up with a schedule like this, and their families were there to help. Family members were also on hand to witness the school selection and signing at lunchtime on Wednesday.

Embry-Riddle’s head men’s soccer coach, Dan Balaguero explained that he had been following Underwood’s soccer career for over a year, and described him as being, "…a winner who is driven to succeed in every aspect of life."
