Against All Odds, Prescott HS Cycling Club Takes 1st in Flagstaff

10 September 2018

It was a well-deserved victory for the Badger cyclists.

The Prescott High School (PHS) Cycling Team came home from Flagstaff with 1st Place for the 2018 initial Arizona Interscholastic Cycling League (AICL) race at Fort Tuthill County Park.

Competing against more than 50 schools in the race, "Against all odds, despite having only 2 varsity riders, Prescott managed to take 1st place in the first state race for this year’s High School League," Coach Robert Myrick said. "We’re very proud of our team, and we were astonished we did as well as we did, considering our team doesn’t have as many experienced riders as other teams this year."

Teams placement is determined by points - each rider receives points based on their level of experience and their times. The team points are then added together for the final scores.

Prescott, a Division 1 team, was not the only local team to participate in the Flagstaff AICL race. BASIS Prescott placed 6th, Tri-City College Prep placed 10th, and Bradshaw Mountain came in 13th.

In Division 2, Chino Valley came in 6th, and Northpoint Expeditionary School placed 31st.

Myrick said that around 1000 students race at each event.

The AICL organization is in its 6th year in Arizona.

PHS individual team members placed as follows:

Zaydie Croy Varsity Girls 4th Place
Samantha Doyle JV 2 Girls, 4th Place
Reilly Phelan Freshman Girls 1st Place
Ryan DePue JV1 Boys 1st Place
Ethan Wright Freshman Boys 2nd place

Get your cowbells ready!

The next race is in Prescott on Sunday September 23 at Pioneer Park.

Plan to come out and cheer on the team!
