High School Football Playoffs Roll On

09 November 2018

There are still good matchups, despite local teams being knocked out

In the 6A Division, both Chandler and Pinnacle's losses were to California schools. Mountain Pointe finished fourth in the Central Region lost three of their games by a total of 10 points. Highland's only loss was to Mountain Pointe. Perry lost their opener at Pinnacle and at home versus Chandler. Red Mountain, the lowest seed remaining, will have to play a near perfect game to pull the upset.

The two undefeated teams in Centennial and Notre Dame Prep should move on, although challenged early. Sunrise Mountain rebounded very quickly last week to beat Campo Verde 38-24, after getting pounded at Centennial 48-0 in their final regular season game. Williams Field lost at Norco (CA) on August 17 and has played well ever since. Look for the Blackhawks to handle the Mustangs to move on to the semis.

The Mingus Marauders are the only Yavapai County team still playing. The Marauders scored in the final minute to beat the Bradshaw Mountain Bears to earn this date with the #1 Lancers of Salpointe Catholic. Mingus will no doubt fight hard, but can they contain the offense of the Lancers to be in striking distance in the final quarter?  Last years state runner-up is set on winning it all this season, and has all the tools to do it.

Greenway beat the Prescott Badgers 40-29 last week and came out on fire, scoring 24 first quarter points. Desert Edge is a seasoned program, and depsite their three losses, should prevail. Saguaro beat Desert Edge, who beat Cactus, but that may not mean a thing. Sahuaro comes in after winning their last three games by a total of 15 points. Four weeks ago, Seton Catholic took 69-0 beating at home by Saguaro. Then they lost at Poston Butte 37-21, before pulling a mild upset over Peoria 54-49. Upset, I think not.

Page, in Division 3A, has not gotten much respect yet. Valley Christian returns with a second shot at the Sand Devils. Page beat the Trojans 22-15 on September 14. Snowflake is the only team to beat Page this season. The Lobos lost a tough one at home 14-8 to Benjamin Franklin on August 24. Snowflake has outscored their last four opponents 131-13. Yuma Catholic and Northwest Christian look to be locks to the next round.

Four teams from the 2A Black Region (Thatcher, Round Valley, Morenci Jr/Sr, and St. Johns), won their first round games. St. Johns is the only one not hosting a game tonight. Thatcher is head and shoulders above the rest.

In a battle of 1A East region teams, the Hayden Lobos will look to pull of the upset over league foe Superior. The host Panthers beat Hayden 46-6 on September 28. The Lobos did avenge their loss to Williams, by knocking the #1 Vikings out last week 30-6.

All games are tonight at 7pm, with the exception of the 1A Championship, which will be held Saturday at 6pm.
